1950 AL Replay- May 8, Det at NY

May 8, 1950

A day after New York snapped Detroit's 10 game winning streak, the Tigers came back with a 3-1 victory over the Yankees. In a very well pitched game by both teams starters, it was the bat of Detroit outfielder Hoot Evers (in middle of picture) that decided the outcome. He hit 2 solo homeruns in the game, the 2nd one in the 8th inning that gave the Tigers a 2-1 lead. Detroit added an insurance run in the 9th and Art Houtteman completed the game, a 3 hitter, for his 4th win of the season.

1950 AL Season Openers

April 18,1950

The 1950 AL baseball season got underway today with Boston, Chicago, Detroit, and Philadelphia all coming up winners. Own Friend, 2nd baseman for the St. Louis Browns, had the best day at the plate going 3 for 4 with 1 hr and 5 rbi. However, it wasn't enough for the Browns as they lost the game to the Chicago White Sox 8-7. On the mound, Boston's Mel Parnell (pictured) gave the best performance of the day by going the distance against the hard hitting New York Yankees, allowing only 1 earned run and getting the win in the Red Sox's home opener. Detroit's game at Cleveland provided the day's biggest offensive showing with both clubs getting 15 hits as Detroit pulled out a 9-8 victory.

got help from Ken Holcombe who pitched a perfect ninth and was credited with

his 1st save.

Ned Garver(0-1) was charged with the loss. He was knocked around,

surrendering 8 runs in 7 innings. 'He gutted it out' Jack Onslow said of

Wight. 'I was very impressed by his tenacity.'

Detroit jumped on top to stay in the 2nd inning as they scored 2 runs on 1

base hits. Cleveland threatened in the 9th but their rally came up short.

The victory went to Fred Hutchinson(1-0) who went 7 and 1/3 innings, allowing

6 runs. Hutchinson got relief help from Hal White who gained credit for his

1st save. The loss was charged to Bob Lemon(0-1). He was not very

effective, surrendering 7 runs in 2 and 1/3 innings.

1950 Detroit Tigers Season Opener

April 18,1950

The Detroit Tigers opened their season on the road at Cleveland and held on to win a nail-biter 9-8. The Tigers chased Cleveland starter Bob Lemon in the 3rd inning and had what looked to be an insurmountable 7-0 lead. But the Indian's battled back and it wasn't until Tiger reliever Hal White got the last 2 outs with the bases loaded that Detroit could walk off with the victory.

The Detroit Tigers offense put up 5 runs on the scoreboard in the 3rd inning
and edged the Cleveland Indians at Municipal Stadium by the score of 9 to
8.

Cleveland never recovered after Detroit took the lead in the top of the 2nd
inning when they scored 2 runs on 1 hit. Cleveland threatened in the 9th but
Detroit was able to put down the rally.

Fred Hutchinson(1-0) got credit for the victory, pitching 7 and 1/3 innings
and allowing 6 runs. Hal White earned the save, his 1st. Bob Lemon(0-1)
suffered the loss. He gave up 7 runs in 2 and 1/3 innings of work.

'I always am most impressed when a pitcher finds a way to win even without his
best stuff,' Red Rolfe said after the game. 'Hutchinson did not have command
of his pitches most of the afternoon, but he proved he really knew how to
pitch!'

New Blog: New Season

I'm starting this new blog as I begin to replay the 1950 MLB season because the old blog was getting a little cluttered. As usual, I'm going to manage the Detroit Tigers and manually play all their games using the Strat-O-Matic computer baseball game (and the cards). In the actual 1950 season Detroit finished in 2nd place, 3 games behind the New York Yankees but I will try to improve on that finish.
