1950 AL Season Openers

April 18,1950

The 1950 AL baseball season got underway today with Boston, Chicago, Detroit, and Philadelphia all coming up winners. Own Friend, 2nd baseman for the St. Louis Browns, had the best day at the plate going 3 for 4 with 1 hr and 5 rbi. However, it wasn't enough for the Browns as they lost the game to the Chicago White Sox 8-7. On the mound, Boston's Mel Parnell (pictured) gave the best performance of the day by going the distance against the hard hitting New York Yankees, allowing only 1 earned run and getting the win in the Red Sox's home opener. Detroit's game at Cleveland provided the day's biggest offensive showing with both clubs getting 15 hits as Detroit pulled out a 9-8 victory.
