1950 NL Game Story- Sept. 23rd Dodgers Clinch the Pennant!

September 23, 1950 The Brooklyn Dodgers clinched the NL pennant today by defeating the Phildelphia Phillies 6-5. Don Newcombe got his 21st win of the season but the Phillies didn't go down quietly in the 9th, scoring twice and leaving the tieing run at 3rd. After getting the 3rd out Newcombe's teamates mobbed him on the mound, celebrating the win and a Brooklyn Championship! The Dodgers have a record of 90-52, 13 games ahead of 2nd place Philadelphia, and with 12 games left they'll be able to rest some players before the start of the World Series.

Left fielder Tommy Brown cracked 2 homeruns and had 3 RBI and Don Newcombe
went the distance as the Brooklyn Dodgers defeated the Philadelphia Phillies
by a score of 6 to 5 at Shibe Park.
 
The Philadelphia fans didn't appreciate the big day Brown had.  He lined a
one-base hit in the 1st inning, cracked a two-run shot in the 5th inning and
cracked a solo homerun in the 6th inning.  Philadelphia threatened in the 9th
but their rally came up short.  
 
The win went to Newcombe(21-8) who allowed 5 runs in the game. Robin
Roberts(18-7) suffered the loss.  He was touched for 11 hits and 3 walks in 8
innings.  
 
'Fundamentals, fundamentals, fundamentals' said Eddie Sawyer after the game.
'We lost this game today because we didn't follow the instructions every
Little Leaguer hears every day.'

August 29, 1950

NY Giant rightfielder Don Mueller became the first NL player to hit for the cycle this year, helping lead the Giants to a 15-6 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates. Mueller went 5 for 6 with 4 rbi in the game and his 4th hit, a single in the 7th inning, completed the rare hitting feat.

Don Mueller hit for the cycle and had 4 RBI and Larry Jansen struck out 12

batters as the New York Giants beat the Pittsburgh Pirates by a score of 15

to 6.

 

Mueller was unconscious all evening.  The Pittsburgh fans hated to see him

approaching the batter's box as he just kept delivering base hits! He tripled

which scored a run in the 1st inning, blasted a solo shot in the 2nd inning,

doubled bringing in two baserunners in the 3rd inning, slapped a base-hit in

the 7th inning and smacked a single in the 9th inning.  New York provided

plenty of action in the 1st inning with 5 runs on 5 hits and the 3rd inning

when they had 4 runs on 4 hits.  New York finished with 21 hits in the

victory.  

 

Jansen(17-8) lasted until the end allowing 6 runs for the win. The loss was

charged to Vern Law(4-6).  Jansen was asked about his big strikeout

performance, 'Well, it's a little odd when you rack up these numbers on the

road - instead of cheers and a running tally in the stands, everything gets

real still and quiet.  Just strange - but it's nice to be able to take the

crowd out of the game.'

1950 NL Season Openers

April 18, 1950 The 1950 National League season got underway today. Boston, Brooklyn, Cincinnati, and St. Louis were all winners on opening day. Brooklyn Dodgers catcher Roy Campanella (pictured) had the best day at the plate today going 3 for 4 with 1 hr and 3 rbi. Warren Spahn of the Boston Braves had the top day on the mound going 9 innings, striking out 10 and allowing 1 earned run while getting his 1st victory of the year.

New York Giants by a score of 6 to 2 at Polo Grounds.



 



Spahn(1-0) contributed a very nicely pitched game.  He surrendered only 6 hits



and 4 walks in 9 innings.  Boston finished with 9 hits in the victory.



 



Larry Jansen(0-1) was the losing pitcher.  Leo Durocher was impressed with



Spahn and his 10 strikeouts.  'It's tough to generate runs if you can't make



contact with the ball.'

Brooklyn started with a bang, jumping out to an early lead in their half of



the first when they tallied 6 runs on 4 hits.  That was all Newcombe(1-0)



needed.  Philadelphia went down without a fight in the bottom of the 9th.



 



Robin Roberts(0-1) was given the loss.  'I was a little good, a little bad and



a little ugly.' said Newcombe, 'I was just giving us a chance to win.'

Ken Raffensberger was able to finish what he started and was credited with a



complete game and shortstop Virgil Stallcup went yard and had 2 RBI as the



Cincinnati Reds won at Crosley Field in dramatic fashion over the Chicago



Cubs, the final score, 4 to 2.



 



Cincinnati had the game winning rally in the 9th inning with 2 runs utilizing



2 base hits.  Ted Kluszewski kicked off the action when he lined a base-hit.



Jimmy Bloodworth was a strikeout victim, unable to help out.  Stallcup then



bombed a two-run dinger (his 1st of the season) making Cincinnati the winners



and sending the 4,463 fans home happy.  Cincinnati had a total of 10 hits for



the game.  



 



Raffensberger(1-0) was the winner allowing 2 runs for the game. Johnny Vander



Meer(0-1) was charged with the loss in relief.  He allowed 2 runs and 2 hits



in 1 and 1/3 innings.



 



PITTSBURGH AT ST. LOUIS

St. Louis took the lead for good in the bottom of the 6th inning when they



scored 2 runs on 3 hits.  The game was a wild affair with the lead changing



hands 6 times.  



 



Staley(1-0) finished the game allowing 6 runs in the victory. Bob Chesnes(0-1)



was tagged with the loss.  He was touched for 9 hits and 4 walks in 5 and 1/3
