1950 Detroit Tigers Home Opener

April 21,1950

The Detroit Tigers played their home opener today and won in a big way 13-3. Detroit opened the season on the road in Cleveland by splitting 2 games and came home to Briggs Stadium to take on the 2-0 Chicago White Sox. With the game tied at 2 apiece in the 5th inning, the Tigers scored 6 runs, highlighted by a Vic Wertz (pictured) grandslam homerun. Virgil Trucks got the home opening start for Detroit and he got the win, going 7 innings and allowing 2 runs. The game featured a rare 5-4-3 triple play turned by the Tigers in the 6th inning.

The Detroit Tigers batters feasted on the Chicago White Sox pitching at Briggs

Stadium. The final score was a lop-sided 13 to 3.



It was a good day for Detroit thanks to Vic Wertz. He doubled in the 2nd

inning, brought the hometown folks to their feet with a Grand Slammer (his

1st of the season) in the 5th inning and stroked a one-base hit in the 8th

inning. Chicago was out-hit by Detroit, 15 hits to 9.



The win was credited to Virgil Trucks(1-0) who went 7 innings allowing 2 runs.

Mickey Haefner(0-1) ended up with the loss. He allowed Detroit 7 runs in 4

and 2/3 innings of work.
