Bobby Avila hit for the cycle and had 4 RBI and Bob Lemon completed the game

without help from the bullpen at Griffith Stadium as the Cleveland Indians

beat the Washington Senators 11 to 4.

Avila provided much of the offense. He tripled in the 2nd inning, doubled in

the 6th inning, lined a base-hit scoring two baserunners in the 7th inning

and cleared the fences for a two-run home run in the 9th inning.

Offensively, Cleveland was a juggernaut. They scored in 6 separate innings.

The win went to Lemon(5-4) who allowed 4 runs in the game. Bob Kuzava(4-4) was

hit with the loss. He surrendered 7 runs in 6 and 2/3 innings and saw his

ERA increase from 4.62 to 4.94.

'I was in my hotel room the other night, working on my swing and made some

adjustments,' Avila said. 'I'm always working on it. If they are getting you

out certain ways, you've got to make changes.'

1950 AL Game: Det at NY June 7th

June 7, 1950

The Detroit Tigers arrived in New York today to play the Yankees for only the 4th meeting between the two clubs this season. Starting pitchers Hal Newhouser of the Tigers and Vic Raschi of the Yankees both entered the opening game of the series with sub 2.00 era's. Expecting a tight, low scoring game fans instead witnessed an offensive explosion that ended with the Detroit ballclub on top 16-11.
There were 33 hits, 12 walks and 6 errors in a game that saw Detroit come back from a 9-4 deficit. George Kell went 3 for 6 with 4 rbi and Hoot Evers went 3 for 4 with 4 rbi for the Tigers. Newhouser was gone by the 3rd inning and Raschi was chased in the 6th after pinch hitter Pat Mullin (pictured) hit a 3 run homer to put the Tigers back in the lead 11-9. Hank Bowory got the win for Detroit and Hal White, pitching the last 4 innings, got the save.

It was a real barn-burner day in Yankee Stadium as the Detroit Tigers finally

pulled ahead to stay, winning a very exciting game by the score of 16 to 11.

George Kell had a big day against New York. He doubled knocking in a run in

the 1st inning, stroked a single scoring two baserunners in the 6th inning

and laced a base-knock which plated a run in the 7th inning. Detroit kept

the scorekeepers busy in the 6th inning which saw them plate 6 runs on 3

hits. New York scored in 5 different innings, but their shaky pitching kept

them from victory.

The win went to Hank Borowy(1-0) who allowed no runs in 1 inning. Hal White

earned his 7th save. The loss was charged to Vic Raschi(4-5). He was unable

to control the Detroit offense and allowed 11 hits and 6 walks in 5 and 2/3

innings.

1950 NL Standings - June 1, 1950

June 1, 1950

The 1st 2 months of the season are in the books. The Brooklyn Dodgers are in 1st place, getting off to a good start on the year. The Pittsburgh Pirates have been the 'surprise' team so far. Ralph Kiner and Wally Westlake have led the Pirates heavy hitting attack and are among the league leaders in several catagories. The NL team I'm managing, the Philadelphia Phillies, have great hitting and pitching #'s but have lost a bunch of close games. While their record is barely above .500, I hope to have 'The Whiz Kids' contend the whole season. (they should, they won the pennant in '50)

Now that my 2010 MLB season is over my 1950 asplayed replay has resumed. The Detroit Tigers are in 1st place and began today right where they left off, soundly defeating the Washington Senators 7-0. George Kell had 3 base hits and Hal Newhouser pitched a 3 hit shutout at

Briggs Stadium where the Detroit Tigers beat the Washington Senators by the

score of 7 to 0.

Newhouser(3-1) escaped virtually unscathed against the Washington hitters. He

allowed just 3 hits and 3 walks in 9 innings lowering his ERA from 4.05 to

2.42. Detroit rapped out 13 hits for the afternoon.

Ray Scarborough(2-4) took the loss. He got hit hard, allowing 12 hits and 4

walks in 6 and 1/3 innings. When questioned about his counterpart after the

game, Scarborough was lavish in his praise, 'It was obvious very early on

that we were going to be in for a long night. Newhouser brought his 'A' game

with him - he had good stuff and was able to spot it perfectly. He probably

only made one or two bad pitches the entire game!
