George Kell had 3 base hits and Hal Newhouser pitched a 3 hit shutout at
Briggs Stadium where the Detroit Tigers beat the Washington Senators by the
score of 7 to 0.
Newhouser(3-1) escaped virtually unscathed against the Washington hitters. He
allowed just 3 hits and 3 walks in 9 innings lowering his ERA from 4.05 to
2.42. Detroit rapped out 13 hits for the afternoon.
Ray Scarborough(2-4) took the loss. He got hit hard, allowing 12 hits and 4
walks in 6 and 1/3 innings. When questioned about his counterpart after the
game, Scarborough was lavish in his praise, 'It was obvious very early on
that we were going to be in for a long night. Newhouser brought his 'A' game
with him - he had good stuff and was able to spot it perfectly. He probably
only made one or two bad pitches the entire game!
