1950 AL Game- July 21 Det. at NY

July 21, 1950

The Detroit Tigers came into New York today for a 3 game series against the 2nd place Yankees and lost in extra innings 6-4. Detroit had come back to tie the game 4-4 with a 3 run 7th inning but Johnny Mize (pictured) won the game for the home team with a 2 out 2-run homer in the bottom of the 10th inning. First base was open when Mize came up but Tiger pitcher Hank Borowy didn't want to put him on intentionaly with DiMaggio coming up next. So Borowy tried to pitcharound Mize and got a little too much of the plate with a curveball that was belted deep into the centerfield bleachers. The Yankees cut the Tigers AL lead to 4.5 games with the win.

1950 All-Star Game

July 11, 1950
The NL All-Stars destroyed the AL's best 13-2 today at Comiskey Park in Chicago. The NL scored 3 runs in the top of the 1st inning, 6 in the 5th and 3 in the 9th. Catcher Roy Campanella (pictured) of the Brooklyn Dodgers had a great day at the plate. He went 3 for 4 with 2 hr and 5 rbi to lead the way for the NL. Del Ennis of the Philadelphia Phillies and Wally Westlake of the Pittsburg Pirates also homered for the NL. On a side note, the Boston Red Sox will loose the services of Ted Williams for at least 8 weeks. Williams was injured in the 1st inning after running into the outfield wall trying to make a catch. He remained in the game but afterwards it was determined that he broke his elbow. The loss of Williams will seriously hamper Boston's chance of contending for the AL pennant.

Catcher Roy Campanella rocketed 2 homeruns and had 5 RBI as the National

League team clobbered the outmatched American League club, 13 to

2.

Campanella was a source of great heartache for the American League faithful

all day. He just kept pounding out hits! He laced a base-hit in the 4th

inning, blasted a two-run home run in the 5th inning and smacked a three-run

homer in the 9th inning. National League had 13 hits for the afternoon while

American League had 8.

The victory went to Larry Jansen(1-0) who went 3 innings, allowing 1 run.

Early Wynn(0-1) ended up with the loss. He was knocked around, surrendering

3 runs in 2 innings.

'I just got in the box, looked for a pitch and swung,' Campanella said.

'That's it'
