1950 AL Game-Sept. 14th NY at Det.

September 14, 1950

The Detroit Tigers blanked the New York Yankees 7-0 today at Briggs Stadium in the 1st of a big 3 game series between the teams. Hal Newhouser pitched one of his best games of the season by shutting-out the Yankees, winning his 17th and lowering his era to 2.95. The Tigers jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the 1st inning off Yankee hurler Vic Raschi and rolled on to victory. AL rbi leader Vic Wertz added 2 to his total while Hoot Evers and Johnny Groth both had 2 hits and 2 rbi to pace the Tiger hitting attack. Detroit now has a 5.5 game lead over 2nd place NY and their magic number was reduced to 12. Yankee catcher Yogi Berra was injured and had to be replaced in the 4th inning, but manager Casey Stengel said after the game that Berra should be able to return for tomorrows matchup.

Hal Newhouser whitewashed New York at Briggs Stadium where the Detroit Tigers
beat the New York Yankees 7 to 0.

Newhouser(17-8) was very good in the win. He didn't allow much, just 7 hits
and no walks in 9 innings. Detroit finished with 10 hits in the victory.

Vic Raschi(13-13) was the loser. He was hit hard and gave up 8 hits and 2
walks in 5 innings.
